{"id":3670,"date":"2020-04-22T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/?p=3670"},"modified":"2020-04-22T01:08:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T06:08:42","slug":"fifty-years-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/22\/fifty-years-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth Day, fifty years on"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Earth Day, fifty years on<\/strong>, looks a lot different from the early Earth Days I remember.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Followers of this blog may recall&nbsp;<strong>my claim to be &#8220;older than dirt&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong>(as a gardener who composts, I can confidently make that claim).&nbsp;<strong>I also am older than Earth Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with many things in the 1970s, however,&nbsp;<strong>I came to Earth Day a bit late<\/strong>. Many schools in the US let out classes or didn&#8217;t count absences, if students left campus to participate in peaceful demonstrations or &#8220;teach-ins&#8221; on April 22, 1970 (Seriously! And it may have begun in a bipartisan spirit of cooperation. But&nbsp;<strong>it would take a few more years, and my evolution into a &#8220;somewhat-hippie&#8221; college art major, before I actively participated<\/strong>&nbsp;in any observances of Earth Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An expanding movement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>first Earth Day was a mixed success, but the movement persisted<\/strong>, because the problems didn&#8217;t go away.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/2\/28\/14754660\/epa-pollution-climate-change-trump-public-popularity-bipartisan-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Decades of laissez-faire non-regulation of toxins in the environment had turned most of the &#8220;developed&#8221; world into a toxic mess<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I cringe when I hear about recent&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/deep-epa-cuts-put-public-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changes that make the Environmental Protection Agency less able to hold polluters accountable<\/a><\/strong>, or when&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beforetheflood.com\/explore\/the-deniers\/top-10-climate-deniers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supposedly-reasonable political leaders discount climate change<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1248\" height=\"1112\" src=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1952-Cuyahoga-Fire.jpg\" alt=\"In this 1952 black-and-white photo, a tugboat squirts water on a fire that is burning atop the extremely polluted Cuyahoga River near Cleveland, OH.\" class=\"wp-image-3672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1952-Cuyahoga-Fire.jpg 1248w, https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1952-Cuyahoga-Fire-300x267.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1952-Cuyahoga-Fire-1024x912.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1952-Cuyahoga-Fire-768x684.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1248px) 100vw, 1248px\" \/><figcaption>The Cuyahoga River caught fire several times near Cleveland, OH, during the mid-20th Century. And\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2015-05\/documents\/aqm_200608_denveraq.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">I remember rarely being able to see the mountains from Denver<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(while the view of Denver\u00a0<em>from\u00a0<\/em>the mountains was a reddish-looking haze of pollution). Irresponsible governments and companies were freely destroying the whole world.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2015-05\/documents\/aqm_200608_denveraq.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">So by the 1990s, Earth Day had grown into a global event<\/a><\/strong>. We all have a stake in our planet&#8217;s health!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifty years on, &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But 50 years on, there&#8217;s still a lot to do<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/04\/climate\/climate-change-acceleration.html\" target=\"_blank\">Global climate change is still accelerating<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Too many powerful people\u00a0<strong>don&#8217;t want to change, don&#8217;t want to risk having to pay for cleanups, and don&#8217;t seem to think they&#8217;ll suffer<\/strong>\u00a0too many consequences if they drag their feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this blog, I&#8217;ve sounded the alarm about\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/index.php\/2019\/07\/22\/we-have-to-try\/\" target=\"_blank\">deforestation<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/11\/habitat-encroachment\/\" target=\"_blank\">habitat loss<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/04\/we-all-live-in-a-potential-disaster-zone-but-were-not-helpless\/\" target=\"_blank\">extreme weather<\/a><\/strong>, and other aspects of climate change<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jansgephardt.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/10\/in-your-future-too\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0that affect us now&#8211;today<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there&#8217;s plenty we can do.\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energysage.com\/energy-efficiency\/why-conserve-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Let&#8217;s choose greater energy efficiency<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in our own lifestyles,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/givingcompass.org\/article\/thinking-forward-reflections-from-ruth-hennig\/\" target=\"_blank\">advocate for climate-wise policies<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in our local, state, and national government,\u00a0and stay aware and informed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Volunteer opportunities abound. So do donation opportunities. If we have more time than money, it&#8217;s pretty easy to find and get involved<\/strong>\u00a0in local clean-ups, community gardening efforts, educational work, or any of the many other initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are&nbsp;<strong>as many different paths to a better future as there are people&#8211;but time is running out<\/strong>.
